Viacom v. Google - An end user's perspective

YouTube liberated the process of creating user videos and sharing it with others. Few users abused the medium and shared copyrighted video. Viacom did what seemed natural; sue a company like Google, which has deep pockets, in order to maximize its own profits. However, Viacom missed a critical point that the new generation preferred online medium as opposed to renting or buying DVDs. Viacom could have entered in an agreement with Google to share advertisement revenue for their copyrighted content.

I strongly believe the person who created the copyrighted content, should not be harmed in any ways, be it emotionally, financially or socially. But on the other hand, I also sympathize with innocuous users who use YouTube merely as cloud storage for their own content. They could be doing this for sharing their home videos with their small group of friends, families who live far or perhaps as a backup to their local hard drive storage. Cases like these impede the growth of such a platform, and the innocent users get deprived of the advantages of such a great medium.
